“RIP to a 360 entertainer” – Nigerian celebrities pay tribute to the late Onyeka Onwenu

31st July came with sad news for the entertainment industry as information surface online reporting that legendary singer and a pioneer of the Nigerian music industry, the now late Onyeka Onwenu, had passed on. She was a Nigerian singer/songwriter, actress, human rights and social activist, journalist, politician, and former X-Factor series judge. The legend was popularly referred to as the “Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press. An active player in many facets of life, she dominated across many fields, ranging from music to broadcasting, acting, politics and activism, and more. She is survived by two children, Tijani Charles and Abraham. 

Since the break of the news, several figures in the entertainment space have proceeded to wish her a safe journey in the afterlife. Oby Ekwesili came out to describe the news as shocking. Legendary Fuji musician, Adewale Ayuba said “ I celebrate the life of our beloved Onyeka Onwenu. Though she may have been taken from us too soon, her spirit, good works will forever live on in the memories we cherish and the love we shared”. Charly Boy wrote “The Igbo nation mourns the loss of this iconic figure, whose impact transcended the entertainment industry.

“Onwenu’s death follows the recent passings of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, marking a period of profound loss for the Southeast region of Nigeria.

“Onwenu’s legacy as a cherished talent and tireless advocate will continue to inspire future generations.

Oh! My sister, Rest In Peace .” Other Veterans like Daddy Showkey also expressed shock at the breaking news. The president of the country, president Bola Ahmed Tinubu also put out a statement mourning the loss of a great woman, and citing her song One Love as one that “evoked a fervour of fellowship and harmony”.

Lawyer and Tv Host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu called her a 360 entertainer in his goodbye message. Popular socialite Dele Momodu bade her farewell on X, calling her one of Africa’s greatest performers. Other notable public figures like Patience Ozokwor, Femi Kuti, Ayuba, Tunde Onakoya and more have taken to different platforms to express their grief. Her impact on the Nigerian music space can not be undermined, a good example is Burna Boy naming one of his lead singles off his Twice As Tall Album after her.
