Downpours and thunderstorms could lead to flooding in Preston and the wider Lancashire area, according to a new warning from the Met Office.
The yellow weather warning, the lowest level of warning available to the Met Office, says there is a good chance driving conditions will be affected, flooding and damage to buildings is possible and that lightning strikes could occur.
The warning is in place from 2pm until midnight today (9 July).
The Environment Agency currently has flood warnings in place elsewhere in the UK but none in the North West.
A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out this afternoon and move northwards, slowly dying out during the evening and first part of the night.
“Many places will miss these, but where they do occur, there is the chance of some localised impacts from heavy rain, as well as damage from lightning strikes. 10-20 mm of rain is possible in an hour or so, with some places potentially seeing 30 mm in a few hours.”
