Donald Trump has revealed why he believes a bullet grazed his ear instead of striking his head during his attempted assassination.

In a post-shooting interview with the Washington Examiner, Trump said he was saved from death because he turned from the crowd to look at a screen showing off a chart he was referring to.

“That reality is just setting in,” he told the news outlet as he boarded his plane in Bedminster, New Jersey, for Milwaukee.

The shooter was able to fire at Trump from the roof of a nearby building.

“I rarely look away from the crowd.

“Had I not done that in that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?”

Trump also revealed that he had rewritten his “humdinger” of a speech which will be delivered at the Republican National Convention this week.

Screams were heard in the crowd of several thousand people and bangs continued as Secret Service agents tended to him on stage.

Trump appeared bloody with his right fist raised in the air before he was shuffled into a security car.

The only details Trump had provided of the attempted assassination was that a bullet had pierced the upper part of his right ear and “much bleeding took place”.

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” he wrote on his Truth Social account in the hours after the attack.

During today’s interview, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said he will now call for a new effort at national unity, noting people from different political views have called him.

“This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago,” he said.
