Ursula von der Leyen used her speech to MEPs on Thursday to slam Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán over his recent trip to Russia.
“Two weeks ago, a European prime minister went to Moscow,” von der Leyen said. “This peace mission was nothing but an appeasement mission,” she said, referring to Orbán’s description of his trips to Russia, Ukraine, China, and the U.S., which have angered EU leaders.
Von der Leyen didn’t name the Hungarian prime minister but Hungarian Ambassador Bálint Ódor was sitting in the room, with the camera directed at him while the European Parliament clapped at her remarks.
“Russia is banking on Europe and the West going soft and some in Europe are playing along,” the European Commission president said, to warm applause from MEPs.“Europe will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes.”
