The 2024-2025 English Premier League title contenders were relatively active in the just concluded summer transfer window.
The reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City, had the most remarkable financial outcome, boasting a net profit of £115.8 million.
While they spent £21.4 million on the signing of Brazilian winger Savinho, the sales of players such as Julian Alvarez, Joao Cancelo, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis contributed to their profitable window.
Interestingly, none of the top three clubs from last season made significant net expenditures. Arsenal’s spending totalled £93.9 million, including notable acquisitions such as Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spanish talents David Raya and Mikel Merino, but they managed to offset a significant portion of their expenses by selling players worth £76.8 million.
Similarly, Liverpool’s acquisitions, including midfielder Federico Chiesa and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, were accompanied by astute sales, leading to a net profit of £14.4 million.
The transfer window was characteristically eventful for Chelsea, under their new owner Todd Boehly, with a total outlay exceeding £1.3 billion.
Despite offloading 12 players in contrast to 10 acquisitions, their net expenditure stood at £46.5 million, outstripping that of 12 other Premier League clubs.
Notable sales included Conor Gallagher’s to Atletico Madrid for £35.6 million, Ian Maatsen’s move to Aston Villa for £38 million, and Romelu Lukaku’s transfer to Napoli for £28.2 million.
Note that the figures provided do not include the future transfers of Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders and Brazilian youngster Estevao Willian, slated to join Chelsea next season for significant fees.
