Argentine president Javier Milei has shown support for Lionel Messi and his family after climate change activists vandalised their mansion in Ibiza, urging the Spanish government to ensure the safety of Argentine citizens.

A group of vandals infiltrated Messi’s €11 million property on the Spanish island on Tuesday, defacing the walls with red and black paint. They also posed in the garden with a banner in English that read: “Help the planet. Eat the rich. Abolish the police.”

Milei wrote on X: “In Spain, communists aiming to ‘murder the rich and abolish the police to combat climate change’ defaced Lionel Messi’s home.”

“I express my solidarity with the Messi family for this cowardly and irrational act and call on Pedro Sanchez’s government to ensure the safety of Argentine citizens residing in Spain.”

“Communism is an ideology driven by envy, hatred, and resentment towards those who succeed. It has no place in a free and civilised society.”

Messi, who bought the luxurious home in 2022 after leaving Barcelona, was not at the residence at the time but has used it for vacations.

The activists stated that this act of “non-violent civil disobedience” aimed to hold the wealthy accountable for the climate crisis and criticise the Spanish government’s inaction.

According to the activists, Messi’s mansion was constructed “illegally.”

The Inter Miami forward is currently recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the recent Copa América.
