In Nigeria, the battle against substance abuse continues to be a critical issue affecting public health and social stability, particularly among the youth.
Recognising the urgency of this challenge, the MTN Foundation has spearheaded the Anti-Substance Abuse Programme as a proactive initiative to address this pervasive issue.
With its multi-sectoral approach and commitment to education, advocacy, and community empowerment, ASAP represents a pivotal effort in safeguarding the well-being and future of young Nigerians.
Here are five key highlights of the annual MTN ASAP 2024 edition:
Multi-Sectoral Approach
MTN’s ASAP programme continues to leverage partnerships with key stakeholders such as the UNODC, Ministry of Education, NDLEA, and civil service organisations. ASAP 2024 witnessed this collaborative effort and ensured a comprehensive strategy encompassing advocacy, education, and community engagement.
Educational Empowerment
Through several initiatives like the Unplugged Training and Volunteer Counselling Programmes, ASAP equips educators and volunteers with essential skills to identify, prevent, and support individuals at risk of substance abuse. In 2024, the programme reached 87,000 students and trained 1,440 teachers across Nigeria.
Impactful Advocacy
The annual advocacy walks held in major cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt serve as powerful platforms to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse. These events successfully mobilised communities and garnered public support for preventive measures.
Youth-Centric Focus
Recognising the vulnerability of young Nigerians aged 15-25 to substance abuse, ASAP targets this demographic through targeted campaigns, including the quiz competition on substance abuse in secondary schools. By engaging youth directly, the programme empowers them with the knowledge to make informed decisions.
Commitment
MTN ASAP 2024 reaffirms its commitment to combating substance abuse as a societal responsibility. The stakeholder conferences, held annually, in commemoration of World Drug Day, facilitate critical discussions on policy, prevention strategies, and community resilience.
Therefore, MTN ASAP 2024 exemplifies proactive leadership in addressing the complex challenges posed by substance abuse in Nigeria. By fostering partnerships, promoting education, and engaging communities, the programme not only aims to prevent substance abuse but also advocates for a healthier, more resilient future for Nigerian youth.
