In the early hours of yesterday morning, a promotional video announcing the release of a sequel to the classic album The Entertainer released by DBanj and Don Jazzy in 2008 surfaced online.
The album sequel is expected to be released on Friday the 16th of August 2024, 16 years after the original was presented to our ears.
The album which had monster hit tracks like Fall In Love, Gbona Feli Feli, Suddenly, Igwe, Olorun Maje and more is ranked up there by music critics as one of the greatest albums in Afrobeats history and is considered to be a template album for projects built on hit songs.
The album was a commercial success due largely to radio airplay, acceptance, distribution and marketing strategies. The sequel sees Don Jazzy and D’Banj reuniting for the first time since the split up of the now-defunct Mo Hits Group. After what seemed to be a messy split up of one of the best duos in African music, music lovers are very excited about this reunion.
While there’s a lot of excitement for the upcoming album, there are also some things to note, Afrobeats superstars have never really done well with sequels and remakes. Songs tend to lose that touch that made them fan favourites in the first place. Stuff tends to be overdone, and the element of nostalgia is always erased.
Though one can put trust in Don Jazzy and his peculiar understanding of D’Banj’s craft, it is also important to note that the duo have spent 16 years apart, way longer than they spent together at the forefront of the music scene.
Times have changed, as has the soundscape. It is also a trivial and sensitive move for D’Banj’s career. Having made a lot of moves in times past to return to the top of the game, this feels like the biggest card played yet.
It is heartwarming to see two legends set aside their differences and come together once again to do what the fans want from them, be it for personal gains or the love of the culture.
It is also interesting to see classic albums being revisited and re-released for the digital age. One can only imagine the possibilities that this could birth for the OGs in the game.
