MTV announced the nominations for the 2024 edition of its Video Music Awards (VMA) yesterday and Nigerian stars are well represented in the new Best Afrobeats category.
Some of the afrobeats songs and superstars to be recognized were Burna Boy‘s ‘City Boy,’ Tems‘ ‘Love Me Jeje,’ and Ayra Starr‘s ‘Last Heartbreak Song’ feat Giveon.
Pheelz also earned a nomination in the Best Afrobeats category courtesy of his impact in Usher‘s ‘Ruin’. Davido and Lojay also earned nominations for their guest verses on Chris Brown‘s ‘Sensational’ while South African star Tyla earned a nomination for her global smash hit ‘Water’.
Taylor Swift led the nominations with 10 with Post Malone following behind with 9. Ariana Grande, Eminem, and Sabrina Carpenter came joint third with 6 nominations respectively.
The 2024 VMAs will take place in the United States on September 11 at the USB Arena in New York.
