The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service has taken action by sealing the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company due to a tax liability amounting to ₦600 million.

Following the operation, KADIRS’ Executive Chairman, Jerry Adams, addressed the press and stated that the action was carried out in compliance with a court order to restrict KAEDCO from evading the state’s tax obligations.

Adams clarified that the ₦600 million tax liability accumulated between 2015 and 2022, during which period reconciliations were conducted with KAEDCO, resulting in an agreement for the company to settle a significant portion of the outstanding liability.

The executive chairman, however, lamented, “Till this moment, since last year that the liability was established, KAEDCO has not met what it committed to do.

“We are backed by the law to seal and take over their premises in order to ensure compliance, and that is what we executed this morning.

Adams urged businesses, individuals, corporate entities, and the general public to consistently prioritize voluntary compliance in their tax obligations.

Why We Have Not Reversed Electricity Tariff Of Band A Customers – NERC

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has disclosed why it has not reverted to the old electricity tariff as directed by the House of Representatives.

Naija News reports that the House of Representatives on Tuesday directed NERC and the electricity distribution companies to reverse the electricity tariff hike imposed on Band ‘A’ customers.

Recall that Band A customers who reportedly enjoy 20 hours of daily power supply pay ₦225/kwh against the ₦66, which was the former price.

Addressing the concerns of Nigerians over the electricity tariff hike, the Green Chamber ordered NERC and DisCos to revert to the old tariff.

However, Spokesperson for NERC, Usman Arabi told newsmen that the commission had not received official communication from the Representatives on the directive.

According to him, “We have not received official communication from the house on the directive. Usually, when there are resolutions, they will be communicated officially. But we have yet to receive the resolution.”

Similarly, some federal universities in areas designated Band A by the Discos have been groaning under heavy electricity bills.

The Secretary-General of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, Prof Yakubu Ochefu, told Punch that the rise in the energy bills had affected the operations of the universities.
