Lee Carsley has been appointed as the interim England manager for the upcoming Nations League games in September.
While Lee Carsley takes over the national team temporarily, the English Football Association will continue its search for the team’s permanent coach to succeed the departed Gareth Southgate.
The former England Under-21 coach, Carsley, was appointed to lead the national team because he is familiar with the players and the international football cycle.
With a focus on ensuring continuity, Carsley’s main goal is to secure promotion to the UEFA Nations League. His experience as a former Premier League midfielder and his successful coaching career, including leading the England Under-21s to the European Championship title in 2023, makes him a strong interim solution.
“Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with most at international or club level,” the FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said earlier today, August 9.
“He offers us a very strong interim solution and we are confident he will perform well in the Uefa Nations League games ahead.
“We are grateful to Lee for stepping up to manage the team while we continue with our recruitment process.”
Ben Futcher will replace Carsley as England Under-21 boss, with the respective backroom teams for both squads to be confirmed in due course.
England are scheduled to play against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Saturday, 7 September and host Finland three days later.
