Nigerian-born UFC star Israel Adesanya, popularly known as “The Last Stylebender,” has caused controversy with his recent comments about women in Lagos, Nigeria.
In a video shared on his official X account on Monday, August 26, Adesanya controversially labelled many Lagos women as “runs girls,” a term referring to sex workers in Nigeria and ‘Ashewo’ in Yoruba.
Adesanya, speaking in Yoruba, criticized what he perceives as the flaunting and arrogant behaviour of some Lagos women, suggesting that their high-maintenance lifestyles are often funded by their involvement in prostitution.
He urged them to adopt a more humble and friendly demeanour instead of boasting and showing off always.
“Lagos women like to feel themselves and are proud. Most of you are runs girls. I know the meaning of runs girls now. Kobo kobo, ashewo,” Adesanya remarked, indicating that he is aware of the term of the word and its implications.
The comments come just days after Adesanya’s return to Lagos following his UFC middleweight title loss to South Africa’s Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 305 in Perth, Australia.
Despite the defeat, Adesanya received a warm welcome upon his arrival in his hometown in Nigeria.
The UFC star’s statements in the controversial video have sparked a mix of reactions, with some supporting his candidness and many criticizing him for his comments in the video.
One user on X criticized the UFC star for his comments, “Even with your money you can’t get girls. Shameless goat”
Another said, “Nigerian women are coming for you, dey play. I Just Dey Waka Pass” While another jokingly commented under Adesanya’s video saying “Most of them are just returning from overnight… I pity you soon when they settle down”.
