Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has missed out on a medal in the 200 meters final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, finishing just four one-hundredths of a second behind third-place finisher Britanny Brown of the United States.
The race was won by the United States’ Gabrielle Thomas, who clocked a remarkable 21.83 seconds. Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia secured the silver medal with a time of 22.08 seconds.
The battle for the bronze was exceptionally close, with Brown, Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita, and Nigeria’s Ofili separated by just four-tenths of a second. A podium finish would have made Ofili Nigeria’s first 200-meter medalist since Mary Onyali in 1996.
Despite not securing a medal, the 21-year-old Ofili made history by becoming Nigeria’s first finalist in the 200-meter event in 28 years, marking a significant achievement in her athletic career.
