Residents of the Kapam community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, have staged a protest at the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company, alleging that a toxic chemical from the refinery has severely impacted their farms, animals, and health.
Starting early at 6 am, the protesters blocked the refinery’s gate, preventing staff from accessing the facility. They carried placards with Inscriptions such as “Kapam Community in Danger” and “KRPC has Destroyed Our Crops Completely,” and displayed dead crop leaves from their farms.
The community claims that a chemical discharge from the refinery on Tuesday caused significant damage. They report financial losses amounting to millions of naira and are demanding full compensation from the refinery.
Despite being the host community, the protesters expressed frustration over years of neglect by the refinery. They emphasized the lack of essential services, including schools, hospitals, electricity, and basic healthcare facilities.
Many residents, who had taken out bank loans to support their farming activities, are now facing devastation as their crops and livelihoods have been destroyed.
As of the time of this report, the management of the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company has not yet responded to the protesters.
