The route for a giant electrical transformer from the Docks to Penwortham has been confirmed.
Sunday 25 August is expected to see slow-moving traffic during the morning as the ‘very large piece of electrical equipment’ goes on the move for the National Grid.
National Grid are working with Preston Police and Preston City Council on the movement of the transformer which cannot go faster than 15mph.
It is due to be moved on Sunday morning from the Docks through to the substation at Penwortham. The transformer is needed as part of an upgrade to the substation in Howick Cross Lane.
The route is confirmed as:
Going from the Marina into Lockside Road and then into Chain Caul Way
It then goes right onto the A583 Riversway through to West Strand
It continues down Strand Road before turning right onto the A59 Liverpool Road
It heads along Liverpool Road and then takes a right to Howick Cross Lane to reach the Penwortham Substation

The transformer is due to be at the Penwortham Substation by lunchtime on Sunday – with exact timings to be confirmed by police along the route.
A spokesperson for the National Grid said: “We’ve carefully planned the route to minimise disruption. You may however need to allow extra time for any journeys during this time or park in a different location to usual. We’re sorry for any inconvenience.”
