Nigerian singer Tems has postponed the release of her much-anticipated music video for the song “Burning” due to ongoing protests across the country.
On Thursday, young Nigerians began nationwide protests against economic hardship and rising inflation. Photos and videos of protests called “10 Days of Rage,” are being shared widely on social media with the hashtag #EndBadGovernance.
Tems announced on Twitter that she decided to delay the music video to show support for the protesters. She also prayed for their safety and hoped their voices would be heard.
“Out of respect for the ongoing protest at home, I have decided to postpone the release of ‘Burning’ music video. Praying for the safety of those outside at this time. May the voice of the people be heard,” she wrote.
“Burning” is a track from Tems’ debut album, “Born In The Wild,” which was released on May 31.
Tems, whose full name is Temilade Openiyi, rose to fame in 2020 through her collaboration with Wizkid on the song “Essence.” That same year, she released her first extended play (EP), “For Broken Ears.”
The talented singer has won several awards and received widespread recognition. Last year, she won her first Grammy award for her role in “Wait for U,” a 2022 hit song by Future featuring Drake.
