U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said late Friday that he has agreed to a debate on Fox News with Democratic front-runner Kamala Harris on Sept. 4.
“The Fox News Debate will be held in the Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, at a site in an area to be determined,” Trump wrote in a post on social media.
Vice President Harris has garned enough delegate votes to clinch her party’s nomination, the Democratic National Committee said on Friday, making her the first woman of color to lead a major national ticket. It wasn’t clear if Harris had agreed to the debate.
Trump explained that the debate was originally scheduled with Joe Biden on ABC before the incumbent president canceled his reelection campaign. Trump also cited a lawsuit he has against the broadcaster and one of its hosts, George Stephanopoulos, which created a “conflict of interest,” he wrote.
Fox News anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum would moderate, Trump said in his post. “Rules will be similar to the rules” of the Trump-Biden debate in June, he said.
The June showdown between Trump and Biden is considered by many as a turning point in the latter’s reelection bid, with his shaky performance damaging his campaign and paving the way to his eventual decision to step aside.
