Autumn is the perfect time for a romantic city break or adventure. The kids have returned to school and the bustling summer crowds have departed, but the weather hasn’t got too cold.
Autumn holiday ideas for couples
We’ve found nine destinations perfect for October weekend breaks or longer holidays with your partner. Leave behind the stresses of work, and everyday inconveniences and have an authentic travel experience while making some memories at the same time.
Verona, Italy
A classic for a reason. Verona is a famously romantic destination due to its spectacular position on the Adige River and the Casa di Giuletta, known to most as the stone balcony rumoured to be the inspiration for Juliet’s balcony in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
The 13th-century house and balcony is a pilgrimage for young lovers but there is much more to see in this historic city. Take a leisurely stroll around the Giardino Giusti, a garden sculpted for the nobility that everyone can now enjoy. According to local legend, lovers who can find each other in the small labyrinth in Giardino Giusti are destined to stay together.
Santorini, Greece
Enjoy a more authentic Greek experience in Santorini in the autumn. No tourists clogging up restaurants and no need to wake up at 6am to get a spot on the beach. Another positive is that while the rest of Europe might be getting a bit chilly, Santorini should still be pleasantly warm. For an added bit of romance, try out one of Santorini’s many winery tours, Boutari near Megalohóri is one of the most popular and they host tours daily
New England, USA
Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire are all popular settings for autumnal books and movies. And for good reason. The leaves are changing and the warm autumn sun is peppered with chilly breeze marking – making it feel perfectly romantic.
Maine is our favourite holiday destination for autumn, with a rich landscape for kayaking, fishing, hiking and, of course, the Maine Beer Trail. It’s the perfect place to get lost with a loved one and embrace cosy jumper-wearing vibes.
The Lake District, England
Autumn is the ideal season for a romantic staycation exploring the Lake District. A crisp morning walk against a backdrop of misty mountains and evergreen leaves is the perfect way to spend some alone time with a partner. Ullswater is the second biggest lake in the Lake District and sports one it’s best hill walks, the Aira Force Glencoyne. Farm trail.
This trail will take you through one of the largest farms and once you reach the top you’ll have a spectacular view. Nestle by a warm fire in one of the region’s classic English countryside pubs afterwards and take in the ambience, we recommend the delightful The Mill Inn just up from Ullswater.
The Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia
On the border of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina lies the Plitvice Lakes National Park, probably one of the most beautiful places in the world. Its famous turquoise-coloured lakes are a must-see for all travellers.
While it’s not a hidden gem and serves a decent amount of tourists, in autumn you’re less likely to be jostling around with a big group.
However, get there early to avoid big lines and to see the more popular routes. To get there from the UK fly to Zadar and then rent a car, or take a bus.
Portofino, Italy
Famous for its spectacular harbour, Portofino is the quintessential Italian coastal village. Over the years it has attracted celebrities and artists to its multi-coloured shores. Explore the Italian Riviera’s storied history in the autumn for a less hectic couples adventure.
Visit the San Fruttuoso abbey between Portofino and Camaologi which puts you in the perfect position to visit the mysterious Christ of the Abyss. This submerged bronze statue sits 15 feet underwater and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, diving up close and personal is the only way to see it.
Seville, Spain
The Andalusian capital of Seville is bathed in pink-orange sunlight in the autumn months, on average the temperature ranges from 25-15°C from September to November – making it practically designed for a romantic autumn holiday.
Known for its spectacular architecture it’s easy to while away the day visiting landmarks like the Alcázar castle complex or walking through the Jewish quarter of Santa Cruz. Visit a flamenco bar in the evening and try out some moves to impress your other half.
The Moselle Valley, Germany
It’s a cliche but parts of German do look like they have been plucked from the pages of a fairytale. The Moselle Valley is a perfect example of everything that’s romantic about Germany. The river twists and turns giving shape to idyllic villages, castles tower behind the skyline and autumnal vineyards are home to some of Germany’s best Rieslings.
Visit Cochem for a traditional tourist experience but if you feel like venturing off the beaten track then the sleepy village of Beilstein is the place to be for an authentic experience. To get here, first fly to Frankfurt-Hahn.
Sofia, Bulgaria
The laid-back city of Sofia isn’t as well known as it’s sister-city Bucharest. However, savvy travellers should know that it’s a beautiful place to explore, especially in the autumn. At this time of year, the city will be less bustling than in its peak season.
Steeped in history Sofia has been a documented area of human habitation since 7000 BC which explains the city’s complex and discerning skyline. Once you’ve packed thousands of years of civilisation into your head just walking around, it’s time for a drink, head to the aptly named ‘One More Bar’ in the city centre for a cocktail and a taste of Sofia nightlife.
