The just concluded MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMAs) did not go so well for Nigerian afrobeats artists Burna Boy, Ayra Starr and Tems as they all missed out on the Afro beats category which was clinched by South African Tyla’s popular single titled “water.”

“I’m thrilled to win this award,” Tyla said from the stage in Elmont, New York. “But it’s a bittersweet moment because it highlights a common tendency to group all African artists under one label. African music is incredibly diverse and deserves to be recognized in its full range.”

The VMAs, hosted by Megan Thee Stallion and opened by Eminem and Jelly Roll, featured a star-studded lineup with performances from Camila Cabello, Chappell Roan, GloRilla, and more.

Worthy to note that American singer-songwriter, Taylor Swift, dominated the MTV awards by winning seven categories including the main award of the night, the Video of the Year.
