‘Gen Z’: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

They say those born in the mid-90s to date represent the ‘Gen Z’ generation. Unlike the millennials (the mid-80s to early 90s) or the older generation before that, Gen Z comes with a whole new set of ideologies and orientations that have never been seen before.

They represent bold, revolutionary and new. They are the present and they make one hell of an appearance in today’s world.

While I belong to the millennials, in so many ways, I admire some of the things Gen Z stand for. In today’s world where a lot of practices are archaic and old-fashioned, the Gen Z are a break from the norm. Rather than continue sheepishly, they force their change and stay true to what they believe in. That makes sense to me and I can identify with that any time, any day.

We all saw the last Big Brother, where Ilebaye won the crown. She was the youngest, which meant she was perceived as the weak link, so fellow housemates constantly tried to pick on her. Despite the mountain of obstacles and backed by her Gen Z army, she defied the odds and won the crown. “Gen Z baddie,” they called her: It was a statement win for a generation that will stop at nothing to make their voices heard.

While there are gains to this new school of thought that Gen Z represents, looking back at happenings these last few years, it seems like more losses than gains are being recorded.

Let’s take marriage, for instance: Never have we seen more divorces and broken homes than during this surge in the Gen Z population and ethos. The hitherto belief was “till death do us part,” which meant that the union was sacred and lifelong. Our parents before us endured a lot to keep their marriages and vows.

Today, the Gen Z don’t feel that way. The vows no longer appear appealing to this lot. According to ‘Gen Z’, staying in a marriage is conditioned on many variables that suit them. In the event it no longer suits them, they quit. From P-Square to Kanye West’s marriage splits with their wives, there’s a clear pattern. This new generation has broken from the old laws and clearly holds a new set of beliefs.

Gen Z

In my childhood, I heard of divorce only once and that sounded strange given that we didn’t have much of that happening. Now, every week, there are multiple divorce stories emanating. Wasn’t it not too long ago when the wife of Israel, the Logistics Manager of Davido, split from her husband? Her reason? A flimsy excuse about Israel being overly respectful to his benefactor, Davido. That’s my point: The Gen Z curse.

Even in our movies, the Gen Z doctrine has filtered in. Filmmakers, in their quest to tap into this huge market, are now bending the rules and making odd tweaks to suit the Gen Z folks. The anticipated movie, ‘Snow White,’ was set to have a black actress play the lead female character. This is a character who’s white in complexion in all the fantasy kiddies’ books. How on earth can a black lady play that role? Well, to suit the Gen Z, the movie guys are now ready to sacrifice the beautiful art. It’s appalling really—a situation where you see movies trying so hard to emasculate women and make them appear superior to men. Geez. That makes no sense.

The feminist cause is another that has been given fresh fire by the gen z and they’ll stop at nothing to stress that, “what a man can do a woman can do better.” The entertainment industry is awash with this and try to incorporate this trend at every turn and then make a mess of all the things we once held dear.

Truth be told, as much as the idea of revolution is appealing, there are just some rules that cannot be touched. They are the order of things and tweaking them, even a little, would make everything fall apart. Why on earth will paternity fraud suddenly become an in-thing? Why would being a single mother be a badge of honour? Why will leaving your husband for irrelevant reasons be the first option being preached? Everything appears to have fallen apart.

I love Gen Z, but I just feel like they need to draw a line between radicalism and borderline madness. We can’t carry on with so many of these new woke ideologies that aren’t addressing anything in society, but instead, eroding our very essence and value as a people. If the Gen Z baddies want to keep at this, then, the least we can do is censor them before the roof collapses on us all.
