A man is fighting for life in hospital after he was ambushed and stabbed inside a popular Melbourne nightclub in front of terrified patrons.

The 31-year-old Endeavour Hills man was set upon by two men armed with a knife and a machete at Revolver Upstairs on Chapel Street in Prahran about 4am.

Witnesses said staff used tea towels to stop the man bleeding before paramedics arrived.

The attackers fled the area before police arrived and were last seen heading north towards Greville Street.

Erica, who was inside the club at the time, said she was “shocked”.

“We were on the dancefloor and all of a sudden six police officers rushed in and went straight out to the beer garden,” she said.

“I think something happened out there. They then closed it down and we really didn’t know what was going on, it was scary.”

The nightclub’s management released a statement following the stabbing, saying it was “committed to providing a safe and secure environment” for all.

“We are heartbroken by the violent incident that took place at Revolver Upstairs this morning,” a club spokesperson said.

“Our thoughts are with all of those affected by this terrible event. Our highest priority has always been the safety of our patrons, artists and staff.

“We have made the decision to close the venue while we are working through the initial stages of this situation.”

The man’s two suspected attackers are yet to be found.
