Today makes it exactly one year since the tragic death of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, more commonly known as Mohbad.

In the African culture, the death of any youth is an unfortunate incident and it is particularly more painful when the youngster is on the cusp of greatness before demise.

According to Oyelakin (2013), the Yoruba belief of predestination should mean that there should be no unexpected death since every person dies precisely when they have been destined to die.

Therefore, if the nature and cause of every individual’s death is part of their destiny, then there should be no sudden death and, consequently, no sorrowful deaths.

There is no doubt that Mohbad’s name will live forever because his songs will be available for streaming till eternity and nothing quite cements immortality like untimely death.

Moreover, the case continues to reverberate through the corridors of controversy and unresolved grief. The death which was initially reported to be caused by natural causes has been marred by scepticism and a public clamour for a deeper investigation.

After a hasty burial, finger-pointing, and a general outcry, an official autopsy was demanded to shed light on the circumstances of his demise. The report has sparked further debate, with fans claiming that the report did not account for several symptoms the afrobeats artist showed before his demise.

His wife, father, mother, and former colleagues have been accused of playing one role or the other in his demise. These accusations have added more pain to the family’s suffering and further complicated the process of coming to terms with their loss.

Just yesterday, his mother, Abosede urged the Nigerian government to allow the family to deal with his death internally at the coroner’s inquest which was held in Ikorodu yesterday.

The coroner’s inquest, initiated by the government to investigate the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death has summoned all individuals who had connections with the deceased before his death to provide their accounts and insights into the case.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s body, which was initially buried but later exhumed during the investigation and transferred to the morgue, remains there to this day. There is still no definitive date set for its final burial.

When will Mohbad start to rest in peace?

Since the Yoruba believe that death is not the end of life but only a transitory process, funerals are regarded as a vital avenue to convey the dead person’s spirit from earth to join their ancestors in the spirit world (Adamolekun, 2001).

If the Yoruba traditions are to be believed, Mohbad’s spirit is still tied to this earth and has not begun the journey to the spirit world.

Yomi Fabiyi led a delegation of protesters to demand justice for Mohbad, what would this justice look like? As it stands, there are no suspects for his demise and authorities maintain he died of natural causes. It’s been one year now, when should we move on?
