Preston City Council is promoting the importance of correct recycling – as up to 4,000 households in the city are not using recycling bins or putting the wrong items in them.
They launched their ‘Join Us’ recycling campaign to raise awareness about recycling correctly, with 93 per cent of residents already recycling in the city.
The council said residents will receive a new recycling guide through the post, explaining what items can and cannot be put in their recycling bins.

The guide also highlights alternative points for items such as plastic bags and electricals which are not accepted in the kerbside bins.
The leaflet lays out what kind of items can be put in different coloured bins. Bins with the yellow lid are for plastic, cans and glass while bins with the red lid are for paper and card.
Plastics must be clean and dry, with no food residue inside while cardboard boxes should be flattened.
Grey bins are for general waste however, electricals, batteries and vapes are not accepted.
Other ways to recycle include dropping items off at participating supermarkets or household waste and recycling centres.

Councillor Freddie Bailey, cabinet member for environment and community safety at Preston City Council, said: “The idea of the Join Us campaign, is to improve the quality and quantity of recycling goods in Preston.
“We do need to improve our recycle rates in the city and we recognise that as an authority and obviously want to work with our communities and our residents to achieve this.
“The literature that has been sent out and our campaign will help people improve their relationship to recycling and improve our recycling rates as a city and will hopefully have long term benefits for the local area and the planet itself.”
Also included in the leaflet is information about what happens to the recycling.
The Material Recovery Facility in Leyland is where it is sorted and recycled, things that have been recycled incorrectly may end up in landfill while those that have been recycled correctly can be used in the production of new products.
Everything put into the grey bins ends up in landfill, which is why Preston City Council are using this month to promote recycling, to reduce the amount of waste which ends up there.
The ‘Join Us’ campaign will reunite throughout the whole of September, with different activities across the city.
On 28 September, there will be an educational stall at SPAR Plungington Road, where residents are encouraged to come along and ask any questions they may have about recycling in Preston.
