Afrobeats legend Rema in an interview with The Breakfast Club addressed claims and conversations on his recent statements that he’s now a legend of the genre and it’s a big 4 conversation now. The superstar reiterated his claims, backing them confidently and described the situation as sad, claiming that you do not have to be 30 years ago to be an icon.
He was asked The top 3 Afrobeats conversations, right now they include Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido, do you think you should be included in that? He responded with a calm ” Respect to the OGs,, but yeah, I’m one of them ones.”
He went further to say “And if you look at it, my impact in Afrobeats has been huge. It’s not just about hit songs, a lot of people have hit songs, but the impact in the journey of Afrobeats to the world, I don’t even want to say a lot but something as little as major awards shows creating an Afrobeats category because of the success of my song has already shifted or opened gates. India as a country, being able to do arenas in three cities is on another level and that’s just a little tip of the iceberg”.
This comes after he said multiple times on his new album HEIS that it’s a big four conversation now. These claims were met with different reactions from the fans and the media. Some backed Rema’s claims and made the same points that he did and some accused him of jumping the gun and trying to skip the process. A lot of the people were of the opinion that time at the top contributes heavily to securing the OG status.
While many artists in the genre have not directly spoken on Rema’s claims, there has been a lot of conversation and feedback since he made the statements on his album.
He went on to say ” I don’t like to talk about it. I do not like to put my plaques in the house and fill myself with that ego. It’s quite sad. Must I be 30 years old to give me that flower? Times have changed. You do not need to be 10 years in the game to be a legend, to be an icon or someone who inspires the next generation”.
“Whatever favoritism under that, that’s on them. Everybody in their hearts, they know. I know. Every body language, from everyone. The game, the artists, everything. Love to everybody though”.
