The Renata Road is a beautifully weird and mind-bending thriller about the chaos of the human mind, brain and soul with mysterious themes throughout.
The story follows a mysterious stranger who checks into a remote hotel. He is then pulled into the bizarre lives and day to day activities of the hotel’s guests and it soon becomes clear that all is not as calm and collected as he is lead to believe. An encounter with the hotel’s maid sets the story in motion with a chain of events that takes the stranger to the edge of sanity.
The film seemed a very interesting and unique concept so it was exciting to see the story unfold.

Left impressed and overwhelmed with the synopsis and the depth of each and every character, the film could be very hard to understand with an everyday audience. It could take multiple viewings and a lot of concentration to understand. However, anyone with an interest in this type of indie film would have their minds boggled and would be left thinking and replaying scenes in their head.
The director Ed Greenberg has made a 2-hour 1 minute engaging film with very clever writing from Alan Mockler, Chris Worthington and Greg Saxton. It keeps audiences wanting more and questioning life morals.
It’s truly mind blowing that this film was made with a budget of £15,000 because the cinematography feels like it would be worth a lot more than that.
The lack of locations and music causes dramatic effect sucking audiences into the screen living this life with the stranger and experiencing the lives of the hotel guests with him.
This film was cast perfectly and all actors did an incredible job. The stand outs were definitely Rebekah Bowman as the maid, Ed Theakston as the barman and Eric Colvin as Percival Lamb. But of course, the leadman CJ de Mooi was the true star of the show. His work as the stranger was truly magnificent and captivating. His acting really helped to expand this character’s story and make him believable and relatable in a dark and twisted way.
The ending of the film was a plot twist and a half and was truly shocking and unexpected.
Whilst this film may not be for everyone and it certainly has issues, the Renata Road is a magnificent feature film from Ed Greenburg and is a brilliant attempt at independent cinema.
The Renata Road is streaming on Amazon Prime Video in the UK. It is free to stream for Prime Members, with rental and purchase options also available.
