As Popular Nigerian comedian, Basketmouth gears up to make his mark in Nollywood with his debut film A Ghetto Love Story, veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD) has stepped in with some sage advice.

The 63-year-old film icon recently shared his insights with the comedian, encouraging him to seek mentorship from established industry figures such as fellow Nigerian comedian Ayo Makun known as AY.

RMD, who has long been a cornerstone of Nollywood, advised Basketmouth to consult with industry stalwarts such as Funke Akindele, Mo Abudu, AY, and Kunle Afolayan.

“Congratulations on your new film ‘A Ghetto Love Story’. I say make I call you, hail you first and then give you advice. You know you are entering a place where people have already established. Hold ground. You fit press things for different places. This no be comedy, this no be skit. Do not do it anyhow. This na film,” he said.

“When you enter, go find people wey hold ground. People wey dey control the whole area. All of them like Funke Akindele, Mo Abudu, AY, Kunle Afolayan and other people wey dey do film well. Wey be ogas.

Call them. Tell them you want know one or two things. No go just dey do gragra or dey call Buchi to do skit, e go fit work, but that na when you dan pay respect to people wey hold ground.”

This advice is particularly poignant given the history between Basketmouth and AY. The two comedians were estranged for 17 years but reconciled last October, when Basketmouth publicly apologized and sought forgiveness, aiming for a peaceful and harmonious relationship.

AY, who ventured into Nollywood in 2014 with his debut film 30 Days in Atlanta, has since produced acclaimed Nollywood films such as A Trip To Jamaica, Christmas in Miami, and Merry Men.
