Nigerian rapper Shallipopi, who has taken the music industry by storm with his dynamic fusion of Amapiano, Afrobeats, and Hip Hop, has weighed in on the ongoing debate about the high fees charged by Nigerian artists.

In a recent interview, Shallipopi addressed concerns that some Nigerian musicians are pricing themselves out of the market.

Shallipopi explained that an artist’s fee should reflect the success and reach of their music. “It depends on your music and where it has gotten; that’s what your price is going to be,” he stated.

He emphasized that Nigerian artists who achieve streaming numbers comparable to their American counterparts should have the right to charge similar fees.

“If your music has garnered the same amount of streams as an American artist, you should be able to charge at that level. But if your streams don’t measure up, overcharging isn’t justified,” he argued.

This stance challenges the prevailing criticism that Nigerian artists have inflated their prices beyond what the local market can sustain.

With Nigerian music experiencing unprecedented global success, Afrobeats stars are seeing their international profiles soar, resulting in booking fees reaching new heights.

This surge in demand has led to booking fees in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, making it increasingly challenging for local promoters to afford top-tier talent.

Shallipopi asserts that Nigerian artists are simply valuing their worth in line with their global achievements.

“Nigerian artists are charging what they deserve based on their success. With the international acclaim our music is receiving, it’s only fair that we are compensated accordingly,” he concluded.
