While Nigerians still mourn the loss of Onyeka Onwenu, as they would for a long time, Veteran actress Joke Silva disclosed an account of her final moments with the late musical icon.
Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away on July 30 at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos, collapsed after a performance at Stella Okoli’s 80th birthday party.
She was buried in Ikoyi on the 30th of August in Ikoyi after a short and private ceremony.
In an emotional tribute video conducted by WithChude, her colleagues and friends said their final goodbyes to the ‘Elegant Stallion.’
Joke Silva recounted the touching details of that fateful day. The actress described how she and Onwenu shared a special moment during the singer’s performance of her iconic song, “One Love.”
Silva, known for her engaging storytelling, revealed that during the performance, Onwenu, in a lively show of camaraderie, pulled her up from her seat for a brief dance.
“I’m a super armchair dancer,” Silva admitted, laughing. “I don’t usually get up to dance, but I love dancing from my chair. Onyeka came around, and we had a lovely twirl together.”
The joy of the evening took a sombre turn when Silva noticed Onyeka Onwenu slumped in her chair shortly after the performance. “I saw Shola Momoh say, ‘She’s not well. She slumped on her chair.’
At that moment, Onyeka was unconscious,” Silva recalled. “CPR was performed while she was on the floor, and we called for doctors in the house to assist. I later went to the hospital, where she was treated for about an hour and a half before she passed away.”
The service of songs for the beloved singer was held on August 30 at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos.
The event was marked by the presence of notable figures, including Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, and Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State.
Onwenu’s sons, Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, expressed their gratitude for the efforts made by medical personnel to save their mother’s life. Peter Obi, who was also at the party, recalled the moment of Onwenu’s collapse and the profound impact of her passing on those present.
