It may be tempting to purchase fall decor from the store; it can be cheap and faster than making decorations yourself. Seasonal decor is a big factor in overconsumption, and most pieces end up in landfills or crowding donation shops by the time the season is over. Sustainability does not mean you can’t be festive, so try these sustainable ways to decorate for fall.

Compostable Decor

Gourds, straw bales, pumpkins, dried glass gem corn, and dozens of beautiful fall harvest produce make the perfect decor. They can be displayed inside or out, and once the season’s done, all can be tossed in the compost or, if it’s still in good shape, cooked up! If not carved, pumpkins, gourds, and other veggies can last quite a while and still be good to eat, as can gourds and other veggies.

DIY Decor

Making your own decorations is fun, and often, you have what you need at home. This blog has four upcycled craft ideas, ranging from creepy to cute, for any age and skill level. There are hundreds more ideas online to fit your home aesthetic.

Sticks, Twigs, and Leaves

And whatever else you find outside that would look nice as decor. Using the leaves that fall from the trees and twigs, you can craft a simple but pretty door wreath or cut out shapes from different colored leaves to use as confetti for your Thanksgiving table decor. Any natural materials can be tossed back outside when they’re done decorating, provided they haven’t been painted or covered in glue. Putting them in the compost will also work.

Thrifted Decor

Not all your fall decorations have to be handmade! Thrifting decor is perfectly sustainable and eco-friendly, and often, you can find very cool and unusual pieces you wouldn’t find in a retail store.

Scents

Scents might not count as decor for some, but fall scents are one of the best! Simmer pots are one of the quickest and easiest ways to start smelling fall in your home and can be tailored to fit your preference. If you’re feeling especially crafty, DIY-ing your own candles is great for reusing glass mason jars and other such containers and can be relatively inexpensive.

Sustainable Fabric Choices

As the weather cools, adding more blankets and throws to the home is very appealing. Choose sustainable, eco-friendly fabric options, like bamboo, wool, or organic materials. These fabrics are either biodegradable or renewable or can be grown and created with minimal harm to the environment.
