Church Street wrong-way driving arrest one of 35 across busy weekend of policing

A man from Greater Manchester was arrested in Preston as part of a busy weekend of policing drink and drug driving in Lancashire.

Police stopped at Volkswagen Polo driving the wrong way down Church Street – a one-way street – in Preston after midnight on Sunday (6 October). The driver, 22 from Salford, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving. He has been released under investigation.

The incident was one of dozens across the county as a whole this weekend which led to 35 arrests in total relating to drink and drug driving offences.

Sixteen were arrested on suspicion of drug-driving, 12 for drink-driving, four for driving while unfit through drink or drugs, two for failing to provide a sample and one for being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle.

An incident on Preston Old Road between Preston and Blackburn on Sunday at around 1.30pm saw a Mini Countryman hit a kerb, flip and land on its roof.

The driver, who had a provisional licence, got himself out of the car but left the passenger behind. She was helped by Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service.

A 29-year-old man from Blackburn was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and aggravated vehicle taking. He has been released on bail.

Police say that if you suspect drink or drug-driving, you should contact them on 999 if the risk is immediate.
