The M61 will be closed southbound for much of the morning after a serious multi-vehicle crash overnight.
The crash, first reported after midnight this morning (16 October) by National Highways: North West, initially closed the M61 in both directions before the northbound carriageway was opened at around 1am.
The crash, described as serious in nature and involving multiple vehicles, happened between junction 8 (Chorley) and 6 (Horwich) on the southbound carriageway where the closure remains in place.
Emergency services remain at the scene carrying out investigation work. The nature of the incident means there is no official estimated time for reopening but the carriageway is expected to remain closed through the morning commuting traffic.
This will likely cause significant congestion.
The diversion route in place, via the Hollow Square symbol, will see drivers exit the M61 at junction 8, follow the A674 westbound for one mile, follow the A6 southbound for ten miles, follow the A6027 for one mile, and rejoin the M61 at junction 6.
A spokesperson for police said: “We wanted to bring you a quick update around the closure of the M61 near to Rivington Services.
“The M61 will remain closed between junctions 6 and 8 on the Southbound carriageway until mid-morning due to a serious collision.
”We know this may impact people’s commutes in the morning, and ask that you please find alternative routes, if you usually use the Southbound carriageway of the M61 in this area.”
Traffic England is currently listing the M61 southbound closure as lasting until lunchtime on Wednesday.
