The American, though, leaves New England with a staggering $4.3million (£3.3m) in career earnings.

The popular franchise is going through a transitional period after legendary head coach Bill Belichick rolled credits on his stunning 23-year reign in 2023.

New coach Jerod Mayo, who took over in January, just handed new quarterback Drake Maye his first ever NFL start with the team against the Texans.

Maye, 22, was the Patriots’ first-round draft pick of the year and much is expected from him as he has large boots to fill following Tom Brady‘s stunning 19-year stint with the franchise.

But Mayo seems to be dealing with several matters regarding his roster.

The American coach attended the The Greg Hill Show, as per his contractual requirements, and was asked about the squad.

The 38-year-old remained coy but didn’t reject claims suggesting the team was in “bad shape”.

The host asked: “Why was the roster in such bad shape entering this offseason?”

Mayo responded: “You tell me.”

And the host replied: “He almost said what he…”

But the Patriots coach cut him off by saying: “No. I’m not doing that one. I’m not doing that one.”
