Police have launched a "high visibility" operation ahead of this week's iconic Bathurst 1000 motor racing event.

More than 200,000 competitors, officials and spectators are expected to descend on Mount Panorama, and Operation Bathurst 2024 aims to ensure the safety and security of fans and local residents.

Police were out in force yesterday as practice laps for the famous endurance motor race began ahead of Sunday's main event.

Operation Bathurst 2024 Commander, Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland, said officers would not only focus on road safety and crowd behaviour but would work to minimise the impact on the local community.

"People are encouraged to enjoy themselves responsibly, be considerate of their neighbours and the people around them, and act accordingly for what is a family event where people of all ages are present," he said.

"We want racegoers to enjoy the weekend, be responsible for their own actions and take care of their mates.

"We're urging all motorists to be extremely vigilant in managing their speed, fatigue and driving behaviour, especially with thousands of extra vehicles on the road coinciding with the end of NSW school holidays."

Police are deploying extra traffic and highway patrol officers.

There will also be random drug and alcohol testing in and around Bathurst.
