If you love cool celestial events, you’re in for a treat this week! The brightest supermoon of the year is set to shine tomorrow night.
According to The Weather Network, this full moon will be the biggest and brightest of 2024. It’s also the brightest Hunter’s Moon Canadians have seen in 17 years.
So, what exactly is a supermoon? Well, a supermoon happens when the moon is both full and also at its closest point to Earth during its orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than usual.
The Weather Network explains that this Hunter’s Moon will be about 16% brighter than a typical full moon and 30% brighter than the one from February.
And what is a Hunter’s Moon? It’s the name given to the full moon that comes after the Harvest Moon, which is the full moon closest to the fall equinox. Traditionally, the Hunter’s Moon signalled a time for hunting game in preparation for winter, hence the name. The Weather Network says the last time we had a bigger and brighter Hunter’s Moon was back in 2007.
The best time to catch the show is when the moon rises in the eastern sky on Wednesday night or sets in the west on Thursday morning. It’ll also be visible when it rises again on Thursday evening — since it’s a supermoon, you’ll actually get two nights of full moon magic!
Make sure to grab your coat and step outside to look up, because you won’t want to miss the most brilliant moon of the year!
