Crews search NSW river for fisherman who tried to retrieve rod from water

A man has disappeared after trying to retrieve a fishing rod that had fallen into the Nepean River in Sydney.

Police said the 68-year-old man was with his wife when he dropped his rod in the water and went in after it about 11am today.

When he didn't resurface, emergency services were called to Nortons Basin at Mulgoa.

A search is being carried out by multiple emergency services crews.

A search is being carried out by NSW Police, the State Emergency Service swift water rescue team, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance and a PolAir helicopter.

Crews were on site scouring the deep and murky water for the man.

Efforts to find the missing fisherman were suspended earlier this evening, set to resume tomorrow.
