Croatian Health Minister Vili Beros was dismissed from his position on Friday following his arrest on suspicion of corruption, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic announced.
Beros, along with several others, is under investigation by Croatia’s Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO). The allegations include bribery, abuse of authority, and money laundering. Despite the charges, Beros denies any wrongdoing, according to his lawyer, Laura Valkovic. The health ministry has declined to comment on the case.
The EPPO revealed that a criminal group allegedly sought to secure contracts for medical robotic devices in multiple hospitals, including EU-funded projects, by bribing officials. Investigations also target the directors of two hospitals in Zagreb and other individuals suspected of receiving bribes to influence contract awards.
Ivan Turudic, Croatia’s State Attorney, confirmed that his office and USKOK are conducting parallel investigations into the alleged crimes but noted that EPPO had not shared details of its probe. Two individuals have already been arrested, and a legal entity is under investigation for suspected bribery. Those detained will appear before an investigative judge to determine pre-trial detention.
Prime Minister Plenkovic emphasised the government’s commitment to addressing corruption, stating, “What is obvious is that this is about criminal acts of corruption. On behalf of the government, I want to say that agencies authorised for criminal prosecution should investigate everything.”
The scandal marks a significant blow to Croatia’s health sector, with accusations casting a shadow over the administration of EU funds and hospital management. Further developments are expected as investigations continue.
