A leading opposition figure in Tanzania has been detained.

Freeman Mbowe, chairman of the Chadema party, along with other opposition leaders, was apprehended in the south-western region of the country.

Reports from Friday indicate that these politicians are being interrogated for purportedly breaching local election campaign regulations.

However, the party’s communications director dismissed the police’s account, calling it a ploy to hinder Chadema’s campaign.

The Citizen Tanzania quoted John Mrama’s remarks. The party has also protested this week that numerous candidates were “unfairly” barred from participating in the upcoming November 27 elections.

In September, Mbowe, his deputy Tundu Lissu, and other opposition members were briefly detained when riot police disrupted a mass rally in Dar es Salaam.

These arrests reflect the heightened political tension ahead of the presidential election set for late 2025.
