Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe has come together with her former Greens colleague, Senator Mehreen Faruqi, to move a motion to investigate racism in parliament.

At a joint press conference today, Thorpe said she wants her workplace to lead the way on safe and respectful behaviour.

"It's simply not safe if you are a woman of colour," she said.

"We're calling on the parliament, on the Senators, to support our inquiry to ensure our workplace is a safe one and we don't have to deal with disgusting racism every time we open our mouth in our workplace."

Last week, the Senate voted in favour of censuring Thorpe for her protest against King Charles during his royal visit to Australia.

She said she wears that as a "badge of honour".

Faruqi, also at the press conference, said the highest office in the country should be leading the way on safety and respect in the workplace.

"In here, it is easy to fling around racism and racist commentary but when you dare call out racism and the double standards used in this place, you are shut down, you are silenced and you are gaslighted," she said.

"If there is any workplace that needs unpacking of white fragility and white privilege, it is right here in this parliament."

Faruqi this month won her Federal Court lawsuit when Justice Angus Stewart found One Nation Senator Pauline Hanson engaged in "seriously offensive" and intimidating behaviour through a September 2022 social media post that breached the Racial Discrimination Act.

Hanson is crowdfunding to help her appeal the decision.

Thorpe and Faruqi are calling for the Standing Committee on Procedures to hold an inquiry and report back by March 31, 2025.

"This inquiry is about taking a stronger stance on racism and holding this parliament to a higher standard," Thorpe said.

"Parliament is my workplace. Racism is called out in other workplaces, and it should be called out in parliament too."

"I hope the Senate will support our motion so we can move forward with consistent enforcement of behaviour standards so this can be a safe workplace for all," Faruqi said.
