A man who has been supporting St Catherine’s Hospice, since it was established more than 40 years ago, has been honoured.

Cliff Hughes has been awarded the title of Founder and Life President for his unwavering dedication to the hospice.

Cliff served on the South Ribble Borough Council for 36 years, where he helped to shape the hospice’s future.

He was also Mayor of South Ribble from 1993-94 where he contributed to the work of St Catherine’s.

Cliff’s wife, Rita, reflected on his community spirit, remembering how he would often return from a simple outing with a new commitment to a local cause or committee.

In addition to Cliff’s recognition, John Chesworth, a longstanding advocate of the hospice, has been appointed as the new President of St Catherine’s.

He is said to have played a ‘pivotal role’ in guiding the organisation through periods of growth and innovation.

John will be passing the role of Chair of Trustees to Lorraine Norris, a dedicated trustee for several years and a passionate supporter of the hospice.

She said: “It’s an honour to follow in the footsteps of Cliff and John and to be part of the great team of trustees, staff and volunteers. Whilst there are some financial challenges ahead,  the strength of St Catherine’s lies in the continuing support of the community and businesses.

“It’s our 40th anniversary next year, we look forward to celebrating and working with our community to ensure we’re here to provide local people with the quality of life to the end of life for the next 40 years and beyond”.

As the hospice moves into a new chapter, it calls upon the community to continue its tradition of support. The funds raised ensure that St Catherine’s can continue to provide excellent care and comfort to those who need it most. You can find out more on their website.
