With Donald Trump set to return to the White House for a second term next year following the results of Tuesday’s U.S. election, his victory has sparked reactions from many politicians and public figures around the world, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The Canadian PM shared his first reaction to the news early Wednesday morning, striking a diplomatic tone. At 7:12 a.m. ET, Trudeau took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate Trump on his victory in last night’s 2024 U.S. presidential election.

In his tweet, Trudeau emphasized the “friendship between Canada and the U.S.,” a relationship he described as “the envy of the world.” He expressed confidence that he and Trump will work together to foster “opportunity, prosperity, and security” for both countries.

The Prime Minister’s office also released an official statement Wednesday morning that expanded on this sentiment, calling the countries’ relationship “the world’s most successful partnership.” The statement highlighted the strength of Canada-U.S. relations, noting that the two countries have “a shared history, common values, and steadfast ties” that unite them beyond politics.

The PM recalled some shared victories from Trump’s first term as U.S. president, including the successful renegotiation of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which Trudeau says “has created thousands of good-paying jobs and has brought investment and opportunity to our communities.”

“We look forward to working with President-elect Trump and his administration,” the statement concluded, pointing to priorities like trade, investment and “continental peace and security” as key areas for ongoing collaboration.
