The flights are booked through Virgin, but passengers will be flown on Qatar Airways planes.

"This is a huge win for Australian travellers which brings more value and choice for passengers wanting to fly internationally," Virgin Australia Group CEO Jayne Hrdlicka said.

"Our 28 new weekly services to Doha will open up a world of opportunity for those wanting to travel overseas, with more passengers able to connect to over 100 destinations around the world on Qatar's network."

Other flights include Sydney to London return for $1982 and Brisbane to Rome for $1945.

Flights will also be available to the Middle East and Africa.

The new overseas routes are expected to inject more than $3 billion into the visitor economy over the next five years.

The partnership between Virgin and Qatar is still pending final regulatory approval.
