The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) to Yakubu Gowon University to honour Nigeria’s former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), who recently celebrated his 90th birthday.

The announcement was made by Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, after the 14th council meeting of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which also served as the last for the year 2024. Idris explained that the renaming is part of efforts to honour Gowon’s legacy of leadership, unity, and service to Nigeria.

The renaming will be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal legislative approval to ensure official recognition.

Gowon, Nigeria’s head of state from 1966 to 1975, is remembered for leading the country through the civil war and promoting post-war reconciliation through his “no victor, no vanquished” policy. His administration also oversaw significant economic growth and infrastructure development during the 1970s oil boom.

UniAbuja, established in 1988, is a dual-mode institution offering conventional and distance learning programmes. The renaming is a gesture to recognise Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s unity and progress.
