When I was a secretary in the early 1980s, I heard about typewriters with memory. And, of course, I had to have one. So, one day, I casually mentioned it to my boss, asking if we might ever get one of those high-tech models. Without missing a beat, he looked at my typewriter, put his foot up against it, and kicked it off the desk, saying, “It looks like you need a new typewriter.”

Now, imagine my surprise when my boss later turned out to be a bit of a nut! But that moment sparked my fascination with technology. Some of us are quicker to embrace new tech than others, and love it or hate it, AI is here to stay. And just like that high-tech typewriter, it’s time to figure out how to work with it—whether it feels comfortable or not. That’s where curiosity comes in. When organizations foster a culture of curiosity, they not only maximize AI adoption and effectiveness, but they also boost engagement, motivation, and innovation. Looking back, I didn’t realize it at the time, but my boss taught me that sometimes a little kick is necessary to move us past old habits and make room for new possibilities.
