PARIS ― French President Emmanuel Macron is putting pressure on his new Prime Minister François Bayrou to come up with a list of ministers by the end of Tuesday amid mounting tensions between the two heads of the French executive.

Despite being a long-term ally of the president, Bayrou only landed the premiership after a tense face-off with Macron. The freshly appointed prime minister then said Monday he was planning to announce his list of ministers by the end of this week.

But he was quick to blame Macron for any delay in forming a government, caustically adding that he needed the president to be in France to appoint ministers — a reference to Macron’s busy international agenda.

Macron, who has made himself a reputation for taking time to make decisions, didn’t like Bayrou’s comment and, in response, urged the prime minister to send his list of ministers by Tuesday night.

Macron is “awaiting the proposals” of the prime minister after he concludes talks with parliamentary leaders Tuesday, an adviser to the French president told POLITICO.

The adviser, who was granted anonymity to speak freely about a sensitive topic, said Macron expects Bayrou to propose ministers Tuesday once he wraps up consultations with parliamentary leaders and a question and answer session at the French parliament.

Macron is expected to soon travel to the cyclone-battered French territory of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, and to attend a European Council meeting in Brussels on Thursday.

Bayrou was appointed last Friday after the far-right National Rally and the left-wing New Popular Front coalition joined forces to topple the previous government led by Michel Barnier.
