Penwortham ‘loud bang’ sees fire crews scrambled and lights dim

Firefighters were scrambled to reports of an explosion in Penwortham during Monday (23 December) evening.

Reports of the loud bang were made across Penwortham with people reporting their lights dimming and interruptions to electricity supplies.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to Mullberry Avenue, Penwortham at 8.18pm on Monday.

Reports came in of a ‘loud bang and flash’ but firefighters from Preston and Penwortham fire stations found no sign of a fire.

Firefighters remain on the scene carrying out a scene assessment. Eyewitnesses reported seeing firefighters combing nearby woodlands.

The National Grid’s Penwortham sub station at Howick Cross is only a short distance from where the reports of the bang and flash came in.

There are reports of lights dimming across Preston around the time the loud bang was reported.
