Road closures in place for more than a year have been lifted as flood defence works are completed in Penwortham.

The Environment Agency has finished part of its £54.7million scheme across Broadgate and Penwortham.

The South Ribble side of the river has seen Riverside Road and surrounding streets closed off while the new flood wall is put in place along with the new glass viewing area.

Workers in the last 48-hours have removed the road closures and the road is accessible again for those walking, cycling or driving.

Work is still continuing on the Broadgate side of the river where parts of the scheme have hit delays and will take a year longer than planned on a section between the Continental pub and the Miller Gardens apartments. However, a number of road closures were lifted in the past week in the Broadgate area.

The Environment Agency is continuing work on a new mini wetland on the Penwortham side of the river to transform the Margaret Road area where it was previously using the land near the river as a compound for workers.
