Preston professor acknowledged for outstanding contributions to art

A school dean from the University of Central Lancashire has been acknowledged for his outstanding contributions to art and printmaking.

Professor Peter Lloyd was honoured with the prestigious Royal Etcher (RE) title from the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.

The Dean of the School of Arts and Media received the rare accolade which is reserved for only 60 members of the society which operates under a Royal Charter with King Charles as its patron.

Peter said: “It is an immense privilege to be recognised as a Royal Etcher and to join a community of such distinguished artists.

“This accolade is a testament not only to my artistic practice but also to the importance of fostering equality, diversity, and inclusivity in the arts. I am proud to continue championing these values and supporting future generations of artists.”

The recognition also reflects Peter’s dedication to promoting inclusivity. 

Having previously been awarded the suffix ARE (Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers), his elevation to RE status highlights his artistic practice, influence as a cultural leader, and ongoing service to society and the wider art community.

Peter is best known for his screen-printed images of Mexican wrestlers. He has travelled as a practitioner and academic and has seen his work displayed in public collections around the world.

He is also the Chair of Trustees for Friends of the Harris Museum in Preston where he is working closely with Trustees and with Harris staff as the museum looks to re-open in 2025.

Peter added: “I am proud to continue my role as Dean of the School of Arts and Media, where I have the privilege of supporting the next generation of artists and cultural leaders. 

“I look forward to continuing the vital work of advancing both artistic excellence and inclusivity in the creative industries.”
