Preston’s hour-by-hour cold weather forecast for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day

As we head into the final days of 2024 the mild Christmas we’ve had is set to take a frosty turn.

Weather forecasters have issued warnings for snow, ice and strong winds as temperatures fall away rapidly from New Year’s Day onwards.

Here’s how the weather looks for New Year’s Eve onwards based on the Met Office forecast.

Tue 31 Dec (New Year’s Eve)

3am-6am – A cloudy night and temperatures up at 10 degrees

6am-9am – The final morning of the year will begin with heavy rain, but it’s still mild temperatures wise as winds start to get up

9am-12noon – Expect 50mph gusts as the rain continues

12noon-3pm – The rain eases slightly but wind speeds remain high

3pm-6pm – The rain eases off, so if you’re heading out then now is the time to go or get anything you need to get done outside done. Wind speeds still up at 40mph gusts.

6pm-9pm – Temperatures of between nine to eight degrees and wind speeds drop below 40mph

9pm-12midnight – What should be a dry end to the day, with temperatures remaining around eight degrees if you’re heading out into the street to wish everyone a Happy New Year

Wed 1 January 2025 (New Year’s Day)

12midnight-6am – Rain starts up from around 3am and by the morning is heavy and continuous. Windy gusts of 30-40mph too.

6am-9am – It’s not a nice start to 2025, non-stop rain. Sunrise at 8.29am but it’s unlikely we’ll see it behind all the cloud.

9am-12noon – A wet and soggy Bank Holiday morning, and the wind chill really starts to set in meaning it feels just above freezing

12noon-3pm – A cold and dark day with the rain easing off slightly after lunch

3pm-6pm – Temperatures begin to drop but the wind doesn’t, easterly gusts of 40mph plus

6pm-9pm – We finally start to see the rain ease off but that chill becomes more so, as feels-like temperature goes below freezing

9pm-12midnight – We’ll see some cloud cover but the chance of rain eases. And the wind begins to drop again.

Thursday 2 January 2025

12midnight-6am – The rain stops but temperatures fall below freezing and the feels-like temperature gets down to minus four.

6am-9am – The sun appears and wind speeds now just 16mph gusts

9am-12noon – A cold but pleasant morning as temperature gets up to two degrees but feels like -4

12noon-6pm – A clear afternoon with temperatures just above freezing and then dropping away to -3/-4 after sunset

6pm-12midnight – A cold but clear night

Here’s how the temperatures look set to be around Preston for New Year’s Day onwards:
Longridge: Will drop to feels-like -7
Garstang: Will drop to feels-like -6
Leyland: Will drop to feels-like -5
Kirkham: Will drop to feels-like -6
