Close your eyes and picture your ideal relaxing scenario. Are you on a beach, piña colada in hand? Are you reading a page-turning novel in a cosy room, only getting up from your spot to accept room service?

If either scenario comes to mind, you may be in need of a trip to an adults-only, all-inclusive resort. While there are dozens of child- and worry-free properties like this around the world, I did some digging to find the very best ones.

Best adults-only, all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean

Crystal-clear blue water, oceanfront suites and peaceful infinity pools await at these top-rated all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean.

If you want to wake up every morning and look out upon the Pitons, St. Lucia’s famous volcanic landmark, there’s only one hotel to book: Jade Mountain. One of the best adults-only, all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, this cliffside property provides sweeping views, suites with private infinity pools and a spa that gives guests the freedom to choose where they want their massages – in-suite and a seaside cabana are both options.

To enjoy the resort and the Caribbean island as a whole in its high season, book your trip between December and April. This time of year brings warm weather and sunny skies, and you’ll avoid the wet summer season. Fair warning, though: Jade Mountain tends to book out well in advance, so you’ll need to plan ahead of time.

Dreaming of Jamaica for your next romantic getaway? Consider spending a few nights at Couples San Souci, an all-inclusive resort that goes above and beyond when catering to couples and honeymooners. Set on 35 oceanfront acres, the property was renovated in 2022, ushering in a new era of revamped suites, upgraded public spaces and updated spa gazebos.

For couples who like to stay active on holiday, the resort offers snorkelling, scuba diving and paddleboarding. And for those who prefer to take it easy? You’ll appreciate the couple’s massages, the thoughtfully designed suites and the relaxing mineral pool.

The food and beverage scene is another standout at Couples San Souci. With six restaurants (plus room service) and seven spots to grab a drink, there’s hardly any reason to leave the resort while you’re there. Read: you’ll be able to take full advantage of the all-inclusive deal.

Best time to visit: November to mid-April

Sandals Grenada

Some resorts are billed as “all-inclusive,” but guests may end up paying more than expected at check-out, as drinks, activities and additional snacks can increase the final bill. That isn’t the case at Sandals Grenada, a resort self-described as “the Sandals of tomorrow.”

Here, the nightly rate covers everything from premium alcoholic drinks and meals at the 10 on-site restaurants to return airport transfers and all taxes, tips and gratuities. This helps to create a worry-free atmosphere where the only decisions you have to make are around how you want to fill your days at the Pink Gin Beach resort, which may be harder than expected.

Guests have access to snorkelling equipment, sailboats, kayaks, paddleboards, tennis courts, five pools and two whirlpools, plus daily and nightly entertainment and live shows.

Best time to visit: mid-December to mid-April

Sanctuary Cap Cana

Sanctuary Cap Cana is not your typical Caribbean all-inclusive resort. It’s a destination designed to model a Spanish village; the suites and villas were built in a Spanish colonial style, and the entire property is divided into three sections: Castle, Colonial and the Villas.

If your room is in the super-exclusive Castle section, your trip will also include a chilled bottle of sparkling wine upon arrival, full-time butler service and packing and unpacking services, among other perks.

As part of the all-inclusive package, guests have the freedom to explore the property’s six pools, take yoga classes, participate in beach volleyball and water aerobics and even join a cycling tour.

Sanctuary Cap Cana is also home to the Jack Nicklaus-designed Punta Espada golf course, known as one of the top golf courses in the Caribbean. No matter how you choose to spend your days, you can rest assured knowing you’ll have plenty of options for meal time. The resort has five different restaurants, each with indoor and outdoor seating.

Best time to visit: December to April

Sonesta Ocean Point Resort

A male couple holds hands, sitting on the sunloungers at the poolside.

While Sonesta Ocean Point Resort was devastated by Hurricane Irma in 2017, it has since made a full recovery, welcoming guests to its St. Martin oasis. The oceanfront resort is a perfect size: with just 130 suites (some of which come with a swim-out pool), it’s intimate while still providing all the amenities of a larger destination.

There are four pools, a swim-up bar, five bars and lounges, three restaurants and a host of amenities that elevate the overall experience.

You can order room service at any time of day, book a cabana, or venture over to neighbouring Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa. The sibling property falls under Ocean Point’s “Stay at One, Play at Two” policy, meaning you’ll have full access to Maho Beach’s amenities and restaurants.

Best time to visit: May and June; mid-November to December

Best adults-only, all-inclusive resorts in Mexico

From Cancun to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico has more than its fair share of incredible all-inclusive resorts – but these are my top five.

Hyatt Zilara Cancun

Cancun is one of the most accessible destinations in Mexico for travellers from the UK; major airports like Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester all offer direct flights. Unsurprisingly, there’s a seemingly unlimited number of places to stay on the Yucatán Peninsula, but Hyatt Zilara Cancun is a top choice for anyone searching for an adults-only, all-inclusive experience.

The resort balances peace with a party vibe. Each room features an outdoor hammock with a view, plus there’s a full-service spa and you can hang out in a cabana by the beach or pool. If you want to splurge, you can also upgrade to a swim-up room with sunken loungers.

After the sun sets, expect themed parties, cultural shows and a variety of other nightly entertainment. The all-inclusive rates include unlimited dining and endless drinks, featuring top-shelf wines and spirits, so you won’t be hit with a larger-than-expected bill at check-out.

Best time to visit: November to April

Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos

Los Cabos needs little introduction, but the Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos, Mexico might. That’s because the property only opened in February 2024. One of the newer hotels on the all-inclusive scene, the 79-room resort is already getting rave reviews for its oceanfront infinity pool, excellent culinary options and beautifully designed rooms, all of which come with a private terrace and either a hot tub or plunge pool.

While all-inclusives aren’t always synonymous with tonnes of food options, Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos has an impressive roster of restaurants. All five of the dining establishments – Del Mar, Loto, 51 Bar, Roca Bar and the Pool Bar – are part of the all-inclusive package, and you can enjoy everything from breakfast burritos and tuna tartare to Japanese-Mexican fusion cuisine. Not to mention, the restaurants at Grand Velas Los Cabos next door are also available at no extra charge.

Best time to visit: December to April

Atelier Playa Mujeres

With nearly 600 suites, 13 restaurants, 12 bars and a 14,000-square-foot pool, Atelier Playa Mujeres is proof that sometimes bigger is actually better. Still, the smaller details aren’t overlooked. Each suite comes with a luxury bathroom outfitted with a marble rainfall shower and Molton Brown amenities; a minibar filled with wines, spirits and snacks; and a 24-hour room service menu.

Outside of the suites, the resort is well-stocked with thoughtful amenities and facilities. During the day, Atelier Playa Mujeres offers wellness classes and water sports, plus volleyball and cycling tours. Come nightfall, expect a fire show, salsa classes, live music, bingo and karaoke. Just be sure to carve out time to explore the on-site boutique, art walk and 18-hole golf course.

Best time to visit: December to March

Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort

A mature couple walk luggage up the entrance of a luxury villa (long lens).

As the name implies, Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort is big with travellers who like to balance beach and pool time with rounds of golf and spa services. It’s also a hit with those who prefer their holidays to include a secluded private beach, butler service and the option to book a room with a private plunge pool.

The Cabo San Lucas property is most popular during the peak season (December to March) right as winter has a firm grip on most places in the UK. However, any frigid wind or freezing temperatures will be far from your mind as you dip in the resort’s two pools or get a massage at the Armonia Spa.

For an even more luxurious stay, upgrade your room to The Towers at Pacifica. This “resort within a resort” has 47 guest rooms with 24-hour butler service, an exclusive beachfront fine dining restaurant and a separate fitness centre, plus other enhanced amenities.

Best time to visit: December to April

Best adults-only, all-inclusive resorts in the US

There are a handful of great adults-only properties – including wellness-focused retreats and honeymoon spots – within the continental US.

Miraval Austin

A person enjoys breakfast in a cosy hotel room, coffee cup in hand, wrapped in a comfortable bathrobe.

Miraval Austin was one of the first all-inclusive resorts I experienced, and I was quickly impressed with its philosophy, serenity and incredibly comfortable beds. Far from your classic all-inclusive resort, the Hill Country retreat shares the brand’s goal of “[creating] a life in balance through mindfulness.” This is a place where you’re encouraged to leave your phone in your room and take part in a range of memorable activities and classes.

The daily activity schedule is extensive; there’s everything from yoga and mindfulness to equine adventures and water sports. But that’s the beauty of Miraval Austin. You can curate your stay based on your exact wants and needs. And while this is a year-round retreat, I’d recommend avoiding the summer months to avoid the heat. (Although there is an outdoor pool where you can cool off).

Best time to visit: March to May; October to November

The Swag

Cozy rustic bedroom with wood beams, large bed, patterned curtains, and wall lamps.
Provided by Leonardo

The Swag – located in Waynesville, North Carolina – is the penultimate example of mountain luxury. Built in the middle of the Great Smoky Mountains, nearly a mile above sea level, the Relais & Châteaux resort has perfected the art of Southern hospitality, starting with the rooms, all of which are stocked with soft drinks and hike-friendly snacks. A select few even have their own copper soaking tubs and in-room saunas.

The sense of intimacy with other guests is most felt at mealtime. Everyone eats at the same time, and all meals are included in the nightly rate. While this seeming lack of flexibility may initially deter some travellers, it’s part of what makes the hotel so special.

In fact, there’s an impressive number of repeat guests every year. Of course, you can still find plenty of privacy, whether you’re hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or curling up with a book and a cup of tea on one of the many porches.

Best time to visit: April to May; October to November

Alila Ventana Big Sur

Wellness is a common theme among adults-only, all-inclusive resorts in the US. Take Alila Ventana Big Sur, for example. This is a place where nature goes hand in hand with healthy choices. Set on 160 acres along the Pacific coast, the 54-room resort is a respite from daily stresses.

Along with meditation, guided hikes and Vinyasa yoga on the schedule, there are two pools (one is clothing-optional), communal Japanese baths and an on-site restaurant – the Sur House – that uses organic, local and foraged ingredients.

All signature activities and meals are included in the rate, leaving guests with minimal concerns. Bonus: Alila Ventana Big Sur is a Hyatt property, so you can earn or book with points as a World of Hyatt member.

Best time to visit: June to November

Frequently asked questions

“All-inclusive” can mean different things based on the property – some, for example, include alcoholic drinks as part of the package – but, in general, an all-inclusive resort is one where the nightly rate covers your accommodation, meals, drinks, resort fees and most activities. The term “all-exclusive” is a less common phrase that some travellers could use to refer to hotels and resorts where meals and activities are not included in the set rate.

Adults-only resorts cater to travellers searching for a more peaceful, romantic atmosphere while on holiday, so anyone travelling with kids should look elsewhere. They’re popular for honeymoons, anniversaries or any trip where travellers want a quiet, restful experience, and many adults-only properties provide curated spa treatments, tours and other services that are specifically tailored to mature travellers.
