The best places to propose in Europe
From the romantic allure of Paris to the magical backdrop of the Northern Lights, there’s no shortage of proposal ideas in Europe. Here’s a handful of my top picks:
1. Rooftop of Terrass Hotel, Paris
A Paris proposal has been done so many times that romantically inclined partners could be forgiven for becoming weepy at the mere suggestion of a trip there. Just don’t do it at the Eiffel Tower. A beautiful architectural feat of mankind — yes. A place where you’ll achieve a memorable romantic atmosphere — absolutely not.
A great alternative? The rooftop of the Terrass Hotel in Montmartre which boasts a spectacular view of the entire city. It’s also an excellently rated restaurant with a menu that won’t break the bank. And the best bit? It’s still somewhat of a hidden gem if you’d rather not propose in front of a big crowd.
- Where to stay: As well as popping the question on the rooftop, The Terrass Hotel also has wonderful suites with unique decor.
- Romantic activity: Cuddle up in front of a classic film at an Art Deco arthouse cinema Le Champo which has been a favourite with locals since it opened in 1938.
2. Orange Tree Garden, Aventine Hill, Rome
Trying to propose in Rome can be tricky — especially if you want to do it by the popular Trevi Fountain ala Roman Holiday. Instead, escape the crowds by heading to The Giardino (or the Orange Garden) on Aventine Hill.
It’s a dreamy place to spend a romantic few hours with your better half. Just remember to bring a bottle of Italian wine, a picnic and a ring!
- Where to stay: The Bio Hotel Raphael offers some of the best views in Rome and is a great spot for a celebratory glass of champagne or a cocktail.
- Romantic activity: Learn about Roman love lives on a Love and Sex History of Ancient Rome walking tour which ends in the beautiful square of Piazza Navona.
3. Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria
Neuschwanstein Castle is like something from a fairytale. Located in the small village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen, it’s surrounded by dense forest and hiking trails. The castle also sits on Germany’s Romantic Road – making it even more ideal for a proposal!
If you want the full effect, take your partner to the Marienbrücke bridge. Just a 15-minute stroll away, the 19th-century bridge was built right between two sheer cliffs and features some of the best views of the castle.
- Where to stay: Hotel Das Rübezahl is three miles from the castle and features a full spa with an outdoor pool.
- Romantic activity: The village of Hohenschwangau just below the castle is also well worth a visit for more memorable moments overlooking the Alpsee and surrounding mountains.
4. Imerovigli, Santorini
Santorini is well known for beautiful sunsets and envy-inducing Instagram shots. Sitting just 1.5 kilometres from Fira, the village of Imerovigli is a peaceful spot with beautiful white and blue-domed buildings — you’re almost spoilt for choice on places to propose!
My top pick? Skaros Rock. After a mildly challenging walk to its peak, you’ll be rewarded with the perfect sunset/rise depending on when you go.
- Where to stay: Check into the Honeymoon Petra Villas to wake up to spectacular ocean views.
- Romantic activity: You’ll find romance at every turn here. Find a secluded corner of a rooftop bar and watch the sky turn orange and pink for a moment you’ll remember forever.
5. Lake of Love, Bruges
The Belgium city of Bruges is another fairytale spot with picturesque canals, vast greenery and turreted houses. The Lake of Love (or Minnewater) is a particularly enchanting spot for a picnic proposal.
According to local legend, the lake is named after a young girl called Minna who fell in love with a boy from a rival tribe. They were unable to be together and the girl died from heartbreak. It’s said that if you cross the bridge over the lake with your other half and kiss, your love will last forever. A perfect intro before popping the question.
- Where to stay: The swanky Hotel Van Cleef sits in an Italianate mansion and is perfect for a romantic escape.
- Romantic activity: Visit one of Bruges’s many amazing chocolatiers and then share your goodies as you stroll along the canals.
6. Polignano A Mare, Italy
Idyllic Puglia, with its sleepy fishing villages and sparkling Adriatic coast, is another one of the best places to propose in Europe. Nestled on the Valle d’Itria is Polignano A Mare: a tiny town whose cobblestone streets are stuffed with restaurants, bars and other delights.
The shining star of the town is the world-famous Grotta Palazzese. Carved out of limestone rocks and boasting a view of the Adriatic, this restaurant offers an unparalleled dining experience. Dimly lit tables add to the ambiance. It truly is a storybook location to ask for someone’s hand in marriage!
- Where to stay: It’s got to be the Grotta Palazzese Beach Hotel. It’s rooms are just as divine as its restaurant, plus it has a private beach.
- Romantic activity: Lama Monachile is a crystal clear bay surrounded by spectacular sandstone walls. Go for an evening stroll, dip your toes in the water and watch the sunset.
7. Landmannalaugar, Iceland
You’ll be hard-pressed to find anything more memorable than getting down on one knee beneath the Northern Lights in Iceland. It truly is one of the best places to propose on the planet — but some planning is required.
The best time to see the Northern Lights is from September to April when there are clear skies. Meaning? The longer you stay in Iceland, the more chance you’ll have of finding them. You’ll discover plenty of excellent Northern Lights guides online. However, I’d recommend going out to Landmannalaugar: a beautiful nature area home to geothermal baths and prime Northern Light spotting areas.
- Where to stay: You’re best setting up a base in the city of Reykjavik. Grandi by Center Hotels is close to the harbour and has seriously chic decor.
- Romantic activity: Cover each other in clay while enjoying the warm natural waters of the Blue Lagoon. It’s one of the 25 wonders of the world!
8. Mljet Island, Croatia
Ah, the Dalmatian Coast. Where travellers go to soak up the sun, eat great food and drink cheap beverages before exploring the varied islands located off the coast. Mljet Island is one of the least known Croatian islands – but it’s also one of the best places to propose in this divine country.
Much of the island is covered in greenery, occasionally dotted with the odd fishing village. Just down from Kortia village is Saplunara, where the beaches of Velika, Mala Saplunara and Blace are surrounded by dense forest. This secluded patch of paradise is easy to enjoy all by yourself, even in the most tourist-heavy months. All you need to do is wait for the perfect moment and ask that all-important question.
- Where to stay: Charming Hotel Odisej Mljet is the island’s main hotel. There are also several guesthouses on the island if you’re on a budget.
- Romantic activity: There are plenty of wonderful places to swim on Mljet, including Sutmiholjska. It’s a gorgeous beach with crystal-clear waters and the Odysseus Cave which you can explore by boat.
9. Geirangerfjord, Norway
If you both enjoy the great outdoors and amazing hiking trails, whisk your loved one to this Scandinavian beauty spot in Norway. There are many magical viewpoints to discover. Plus, the village of Geiranger has a lovely rustic charm where you can relax in your newly-engaged bliss.
- Where to stay: Try the Hotel Union Geiranger Bad & Spa. It’s right on the water has a a heated outdoor pool and spa.
- Romantic activity: Enjoy a Champagne toast on a 90 minute boat ride through the Geirangerfjord. Don’t miss spying the famed Seven Sisters Waterfall!
Best places to propose in the UK & Ireland
If you haven’t got the cash for a proposal abroad, never fear. The UK and Ireland are full of divine destinations ideal for a couples’ break. What’s more, most offer up special places where you can pop the question — from natural beauty spots to man made wonders.
10. The Shard, London
London is huge (the boundary is nearly ten times the size of Paris). This makes picking a place to propose daunting – especially with its countless ornate buildings, spectacular parks and romantic history. Instead, why not see London in its full glory atop The Shard? The tallest building in the UK is home to six fine-dining restaurants, all of which serve excellent cuisine and drinks to help woo your prospective fiancee.
- Where to stay: The Shangri-La Hotel is located inside The Shard, so you won’t need to travel too far.
- Romantic activity: Take your loved one to the ‘View from the Shard’ observatory deck on the 72nd floor. Just make sure they’re not afraid of heights first…
11. Cliffs of Moher, Ireland
On the southeastern part of Ireland in County Clare is the Cliffs of Moher: 8 kilometres of towering coastal cliffs. They’re one of the most popular attractions in Ireland — and it’s easy to see why. The view across the great expanse of ocean is truly breathtaking and a fantastic location for a proposal.
If you want to have some peace for your engagement, go very early in the morning. You can also check Google Places Live function for up-to-date information on when the area gets busy.
- Where to stay: For an authentic Irish village stay, book the Roadford House. From here you can celebrate at the nearby McDermott’s pub where Irish music is performed until late.
- Romantic activity: If you fancy getting cosy together in a tiny tower, climb the castle-like O’Brien’s Tower. It also provides lovely views from its summit.
12. Glencoe, Scottish Highlands
Nothing says “I love you” more than forcing a partner to climb up a mountain. However, the Pap of Glencoe is 100% worth the effort – and one of the best places to propose in Scotland!
Glencoe itself is one of the country’s most historic, and arguably most beautiful, glens. The around-5-hour trek to the top of the most accessible mountain in the region will proffer glorious views — and the most stunning backdrop for a proposal. Keep your eyes peeled for Glencoe Village behind you and Lochleven in the distance.
- Where to stay: The Glencoe Inn exudes cosiness and is ideal for a romantic countryside stay in the Highlands.
- Romantic activity: Snuggle up together with a blanket and a hot toddy outdoors, and enjoy some fine star-gazing opportunities.
Best places to propose in the US
Fancy going further afield? The US is a sublime option, with iconic cities, bold landmarks and the happiest place on Earth to boot. Here are three of the best places to propose:
13. Central Park, New York City
New York City is a classic pick for a proposal. Forgo the typical marriage spot of the Empire State Building that’s bustling with snap-happy tourists. Instead, head to Bow Bridge in the middle of Central Park. Overlooking the park’s serene boating lake (which is home to myriad wildlife), it’s a picturesque place to pop the big question.
- Where to stay: The Times Square EDITION is ideally located, with Times Square and the Rockefeller Center on your doorstep.
- Romantic activity: Walk arm-in-arm through Brooklyn’s Botanical Gardens. You’ll have 52 acres of woodland and gorgeous terraces to explore. If you’re visiting between April and May, don’t miss the iconic cherry trees.
14. The Las Vegas Dancing Waterfalls, Nevada
Las Vegas isn’t all about casinos and partying. Book a table for dinner outside The Bellagio Hotel to enjoy a front row seat of the dancing waterfalls. The shows are every fifteen minutes, so you’ll have to get your timings right if you want them in your magical proposal.
- Where to stay: The Bellagio Hotel is a Las Vegas icon. And movie-lovers will recognise it as the setting of George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s smash hit movie, Ocean’s 11.
- Romantic activity: Both got a head for heights? Take a flight over the Grand Canyon at sunset in a helicopter.
15. Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Florida
Looking to treat your partner to a royal experience? Why not propose in front of Cinderella’s Castle itself? Immerse yourself in the magic of Disney and get down on one knee in front of the beautiful 189 foot structure.
It sits right in the heart of the flagship Magic Kingdom theme park in Bay Lake, Florida. Grab a Disney photographer and seize the day for some amazing pictures!
- Where to stay: Disney’s Wilderness Lodge which is a short boat ride away from the Magic Kingdom theme park.
- Romantic activity: Enjoy a celebratory dinner in Cinderella’s Castle itself. You might even get to meet the princess herself.
Best ways to propose: top tips
Choosing the right place to propose can seem overwhelming. There are so many incredible options (as you’ve seen above!). Here are a few things to bear in mind though:
- Make sure it’s meaningful. Selecting a destination based on what’s important to you and your other half is always a good proposal idea. If you both like being in the great outdoors, don’t choose a city. Or if you have an appreciation for good food, a restaurant might be a good option.
- Consider somewhere you love. Is there a place you’ve both been before that you absolutely adored? Or maybe a destination you’ve always wanted to show your partner? It could be the perfect setting to get down on one knee.
- Private or public? The thought of proposing in front a crowd of strangers might seem horrifying to some. For others, a big, bold declaration of love is ideal. Consider what you and your partner would prefer and plan accordingly.
