The best places to propose in Europe
From the romantic allure of Paris to the magical backdrop of the Northern Lights, there’s no shortage of proposal ideas in Europe. Here’s a handful of my top picks:
1. Rooftop of Terrass Hotel, Paris
A Paris proposal has been done so many times that romantically inclined partners could be forgiven for becoming weepy at the mere suggestion of a trip there. Just don’t do it at the Eiffel Tower. A beautiful architectural feat of mankind — yes. A place where you’ll achieve a memorable romantic atmosphere — absolutely not.
A great alternative? The rooftop of the Terrass Hotel in Montmartre which boasts a spectacular view of the entire city. It’s also an excellently rated restaurant with a menu that won’t break the bank. And the best bit? It’s still somewhat of a hidden gem if you’d rather not propose in front of a big crowd.
- Where to stay: As well as popping the question on the rooftop, The Terrass Hotel also has wonderful suites with unique decor.
- Romantic activity: Cuddle up in front of a classic film at an Art Deco arthouse cinema Le Champo which has been a favourite with locals since it opened in 1938.
2. Orange Tree Garden, Aventine Hill, Rome
Trying to propose in Rome can be tricky — especially if you want to do it by the popular Trevi Fountain ala Roman Holiday. Instead, escape the crowds by heading to The Giardino (or the Orange Garden) on Aventine Hill.
It’s a dreamy place to spend a romantic few hours with your better half. Just remember to bring a bottle of Italian wine, a picnic and a ring!

Santorini is well known for beautiful sunsets and envy-inducing Instagram shots. Sitting just 1.5 kilometres from Fira, the village of Imerovigli is a peaceful spot with beautiful white and blue-domed buildings — you’re almost spoilt for choice on places to propose!
My top pick? Skaros Rock. After a mildly challenging walk to its peak, you’ll be rewarded with the perfect sunset/rise depending on when you go.

5. Lake of Love, Bruges
The Belgium city of Bruges is another fairytale spot with picturesque canals, vast greenery and turreted houses. The Lake of Love (or Minnewater) is a particularly enchanting spot for a picnic proposal.
According to local legend, the lake is named after a young girl called Minna who fell in love with a boy from a rival tribe. They were unable to be together and the girl died from heartbreak. It’s said that if you cross the bridge over the lake with your other half and kiss, your love will last forever. A perfect intro before popping the question.

6. Polignano A Mare, Italy
Idyllic Puglia, with its sleepy fishing villages and sparkling Adriatic coast, is another one of the best places to propose in Europe. Nestled on the Valle d’Itria is Polignano A Mare: a tiny town whose cobblestone streets are stuffed with restaurants, bars and other delights.
The shining star of the town is the world-famous Grotta Palazzese. Carved out of limestone rocks and boasting a view of the Adriatic, this restaurant offers an unparalleled dining experience. Dimly lit tables add to the ambiance. It truly is a storybook location to ask for someone’s hand in marriage!

7. Landmannalaugar, Iceland
You’ll be hard-pressed to find anything more memorable than getting down on one knee beneath the Northern Lights in Iceland. It truly is one of the best places to propose on the planet — but some planning is required.
The best time to see the Northern Lights is from September to April when there are clear skies. Meaning? The longer you stay in Iceland, the more chance you’ll have of finding them. You’ll discover plenty of excellent Northern Lights guides online. However, I’d recommend going out to Landmannalaugar: a beautiful nature area home to geothermal baths and prime Northern Light spotting areas.
- Where to stay: You’re best setting up a base in the city of Reykjavik. Grandi by Center Hotels is close to the harbour and has seriously chic decor.
- Romantic activity: Cover each other in clay while enjoying the warm natural waters of the Blue Lagoon. It’s one of the 25 wonders of the world!
8. Mljet Island, Croatia
Ah, the Dalmatian Coast. Where travellers go to soak up the sun, eat great food and drink cheap beverages before exploring the varied islands located off the coast. Mljet Island is one of the least known Croatian islands – but it’s also one of the best places to propose in this divine country.
Much of the island is covered in greenery, occasionally dotted with the odd fishing village. Just down from Kortia village is Saplunara, where the beaches of Velika, Mala Saplunara and Blace are surrounded by dense forest. This secluded patch of paradise is easy to enjoy all by yourself, even in the most tourist-heavy months. All you need to do is wait for the perfect moment and ask that all-important question.

This makes picking a place to propose daunting – especially with its countless ornate buildings, spectacular parks and romantic history. Instead, why not see London in its full glory atop The Shard?
